Four Reasons Why I’m Still Playing WoW

These days it feels kind of… well, not really embarrassing, but weird to admit that I still play it.  It’s like saying “I still write checks” or “I still have a VCR” or something.  Isn’t WoW that game that everyone’s moved on from by now?  Aren’t all the hip and happening gamers playing FFXIV and Dota 2 and Hearthstone and all that other stuff?

And yet eleven years after its release, I’m still here in WoW.  Why?  Well, I imagine everyone has a different answer to this question, but for me, it comes down to four main reasons:

1.) WoW Token

Wow_token01For me, this is definitely the biggie.  If I still had to cash out real money for this game, there’s a good chance I would be either on hiatus right now or heading to hiatus very soon.  But since I can make enough gold to pay for my subscription just by doing garrison stuff every day… why not stay subscribed?

2.) WoW is a Theme Park Game

1f3a0-Theme parkIn a way, WoW reminds me a lot of those games that were big in the late 90s.  Stuff like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie.  The gimmick in those games were that there were a bunch of mini-worlds inside a big overworld, and you could go to whichever mini-world you wanted to go to.

WoW is similar.  It’s been around for so long and there’s so much to do at this point that it just feels like its own mini theme park.  Even if you don’t raid, there’s stuff to do.  It’s a lot of entertainment for free (if you’re using the WoW Token).

3.) I Like the Lore and World

ElfArcherIt’s probably a little silly but it’s actually one of the things that keeps me invested in the game.  If I didn’t find the lore and characters as interesting as I do, I don’t know if I’d still be playing.

And, finally…

4.) It’s Just Comforting

Potato_Soup-iconBecause I know all the little nooks and crannies of this game, I can sit down at the end of a long stressful day and shoot stuff without thinking or worrying.  It’s pretty nice to have a ready-to-play comfort game.

So yeah.  It’s 2015 and I’m still playin’ WoW.  Hey, I’ve also still got a CD player in my car and I still wear a watch.  It’s all good.

Five Best Things to Come out of Warlords of Draenor

I know, I know, this expansion is probably the most controversial one yet.  But there was a lot of stuff I liked about it, at least.  Here’s my list:

1.) Garrisons

I am going to defend these til the day I die.  Fantastic for social anxiety stricken players like myself, and also fantastic for being money printing machines.

2.) Reagent Bank

I love this thing so much.  It was such a little thing but it made a gigantic difference when it came to quality of life and saving bagspace.  Related: reagents stacking to 200, and being able to craft right from the bank.  Gosh this was a great idea.

3.) Heirloom Tab

I remember back in Wrath of the Lich King when starting a character on a new server meant running heroics for days so I could get the badges to buy an all new set of heirloom gear, stick it on a new character, and then pay real money to transfer said character to a new server.  I mean, I guess you didn’t HAVE to do all that, but heirlooms spoiled me quick, and I’m so glad that it’s easier than ever to be spoiled.

4.) Twitter Integration

As anyone who follows me on Twitter can attest, I love sharing screenshots of video games.  Now I can share EVEN MORE screenshots of video games!  Bwahaha!  Anyways this has spoiled me a lot and I now wish that all games came with Twitter integration because it’s just so great.

5.) Timewalking

I’ve talked about this a million times before and I’m talking about it again because I love it.  The great thing about it is that it’s optional and nets you some neato mount rewards but it’s not required for progression, so people who don’t want to do old content don’t have to.  But for nostalgia hounds like me?  Bring on the rose-tinted glasses!

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Updated character models, bag improvments (like the sorting button), and an overall improved dailies experience (IMO).

So yeah!  The quality of life changes have been good to us this time around, I feel.

Top Ten Clearly Most Important Things to Know About Patch 6.2

The big patch is coming in about five days and hopefully this time we’ll get more than SELFIE cameras (I mean, I LOVE the selfies and the Twitter integration but come on Blizzard.)  So, what can we look forward to this time?  Well…

1. NOSTALGIA – aka timewalking.  TBC and WotLK friends, to me!  This is our hour.

2. TANAAN JUNGLE – aka “LOTSA NEW MONSTERS!  …okay well they’re new skins of old monsters, whatever.  New quests!  Okay, well they’re the same quests but BETTER REWARDS… okay well they’re not really better rewards they’re kind of  the same armor skins too you’re kind of lazy Blizzard BUT THAT’S NOT THE POINT”

3. FLYING – aka finally I can do in five minutes what I’ve been doing in twenty MY BODY IS READY

4. SAYING FAREWELL TO ASPECT OF THE FOX – aka oh yeah we still have that spell?  Huh.

5. AIRCRAFT CARRIERS – aka what game is this again?  Am I playing World of Warcraft or am I playing Hearts of Iron II?

… huh.  I’m running out of stuff.  Okay let’s see here, lemme dig, I’m sure I can find something… A HA

6. PVP NERFS FOR HUNTERS!  Because you know I don’t lose Alterac Valley enough already… okay this isn’t really something to look forward to for me soooo moving on

7. BLINGTRON’S SECRET VAULT is gonna give us more money like, did you guys see this one?  MMO-Champion dug it up and I’m okay with it.

8. NEW RAID which is going to be unlocked…

…very…

…slowly…

…on LFR…

okay I’m starting to stall here, I’m honestly running out of stuff to say, so

9. AIRCRAFT CARRIERS

and 10. AIRCRAFT CARRIERS

Basically I’m here to collect my boats, Blizzard, give me my boats, please and thank you

Top Six Things I Want To See At BlizzCon

1. Gnome hunters.

2. The ability to be a subrace (like a Dark Iron/Wildhammer Dwarf, Mag’har Orc, etc.)

3. Gnome-based expansion pack announced.  (Alternatively, Blizzard should just hire this guy.)

4. Cross-faction partying if you so desire, because apparently 98% of my friends started playing Alliance when I started playing Horde.  Also, cross-faction Alterac Valley so I can actually win it for once.

5. …flying in Draenor?  Please?  Seriously, how long has the expac been out?  (I didn’t have a problem with it whilst leveling but now that I’m max, c’mon Blizz.  Ain’t nobody got time to run around for an hour every time you do a Garrison Harrison quest.)

6. WARCRAFT IV.  NEXT YEAR.

1418383163022

Honorable Mention: New Diablo III expac.

Tell me, my friends, what do YOU want to see?

Top 457 Things I Need In My Garrison

1. A bed.

2. More songs for my jukebox.  Remember that kazoo song from MoP?  Where is that, Blizzard?

3. Customizable building styles.  Level 3 Barracks get us racial guards but where’s our racial buildings, Blizzard?  Hmmmm?  Seriously just make it so different building styles cost garrison resources and then sit back and watch as us saps run around frantically doing garrison stuff again.

…okay, so that was three things.  I was only 454 off from my original estimate.  Not a huge difference, really.

Hey, hey guys, question.

Am I the only person who has never, ever been bothered by the roaring log-in screen dragon? I mean really. It’s not that loud. (At least it’s not on my computer.) And it’s kind of cool.

…I mean, I know I’m also the weirdo that is too lazy to turn on Instant Quest Text, and who had the profanity filter on for like three years because… well, for the same reason. The lazy thing. (Besides, when I talk, it’s usually like Napoleon Dynamite. Gosh. And when other people talk you can figure out what they’re actually saying through context, it’s not that difficult.)

Heck, let’s make a list.

TOP THREE THINGS IN WOW THAT ANNOY EVERYONE ELSE BUT DON’T ANNOY ME:

1.) Log-in Screen Dragon

2.) Slow Quest Text
3.) Profanity Filter

…and for good measure, let’s toss in

TOP THREE THINGS IN WOW THAT ANNOY ME BUT PROBABLY NOT ANYONE ELSE:

1.) Not having at least one point in Improved Mend Pet because having debuffs on my pet make me go ASDGIHWEIOATJSKGH *panicflail*
2.) Tiger mounts, because they still remind me of Lisa Frank stickers and three-ring binders.
3.) Logging out with unused healthstones. I just feel bad because the warlock went through all that trouble to make healthstones and then you just forget about it. Seriously, I NEVER REMEMBER to use the stupid healthstone. Sometimes, before logging out, I’ll go hurl myself off of a cliff somewhere so I can take damage just so I can use the healthstone. Hey, I never said I made sense.

Top Five Characters I Should Have Kept Playing, But Didn’t

Hello! I’m all settled into my new place, albeit jobless (though if worse comes to worse there’s always K-Mart… u_u ) so I’m back to pester you all! Exciting, no?

Let’s get down to business. 4.0 is coming out today. Don’t come to me for any guides or anything, at least for a bit. I’m no good at explaining things if I haven’t actually sat down and done said things (I’m a “learning by doing” person, 100%), and since I never got into the Beta and I’m not really a PTR kinda girl I have no idea how the new gameplay is going to be. Nor am I overly concerned. I’ll figure it out as it comes. *shrug*

So instead, have a list of awesome characters I started but then abandoned.

Tanfarr the Level 27 Draenei Paladin
I had a great RP for Tanfarr. The idea was that he was a very devout and just Paladin who was horrible at speaking Common. Thus, everything he attempted to say would come out very very wrong. (“The hand of the light touches you in a very special way!”) The joke is that poor Tanfarr would never dream of saying this stuff in his native tongue but has no idea how racy it all is.

So I was really excited about this character and paladin’ing was actually pretty fun for a while. Then I just, I dunno, got bored. I guess I got tired about only having like two attacks. It’s been about a year and a half since I logged into him, I think (not counting the time I stripped him of his BoAs to send them to other characters). Sorry ol’ buddy. I keep him around just in case.

Skybinder: aka Goggles Bear: Level 29 Feral Druid
Hey remember when I quit WoW? Yeah, I was actually gone for a good few months. Then I decided to come back, but for a while, I still didn’t want anything to do with my 80s or endgame and I didn’t want to be tempted by them, either. So I activated a second account and spent a really fun month and a half playing from scratch as a feral druid engineer. I had no BoA items and no help from any level 80s and it was honestly a really good time. I successfully tanked a couple instances (my first attempt at doing so) but then a bad SFK run turned me off of it for a while and I opted to kitty my way through dozens of Arathi Basins instead. Good times. Really good times.

So what happened? Well, long story short I finally decided to reactivate my original account. Then I wanted to save money by not having two accounts running at once, so Skybinder has been stuck on an inactive account since then.

Goggles Bear lives on, though; recently rerolled as a tauren druid who I’m excited about. Engineer, of course.

I drew it :3

Any Death Knight I’ve Ever Rolled
I dunno about you guys but I really do think the DK starter quests are a tour de force. It’s always an experience when I go through them, and I always come out of them really excited about my Death Knight. The first time I did it I remember I’d see other DKs running around afterward and feel an odd kinship with them… they know what I’ve been through. Props to Blizzard for making an emotional connection like that.

Of course then you’re kicked out into Hellfire Peninsula (a zone that I hate) with no idea how to play your class.

No Death Knight I’ve ever played has gotten beyond level 58. I try. And I fail. I always get really close to 59, but it just never happens.

RIP, Pike’s Death Knights.

Any Mage I’ve Ever Rolled
I have this really bad habit of rolling mages, getting them up to the mid-10s or early-20s, and then getting distracted.

I don’t know what it is. I like mages. I just… I dunno.

The highest level mage I have is… huh, can’t check at the moment. I wanna say level 27. I turned her into one of my bank alts some time during Burning Crusade. Oh well.

McDuff, the Level 13/14(?) Undead Mage
He falls into the above “Any Mage I’ve Ever Rolled” category as well, but I wanna give him his own section. I had a really fun backstory for this guy. Geeky sciency farmkid who goes to Lordaeron to study geeky sciencey things and gets undead-ified by the Scourge. Bad timing and all that. Of course, that doesn’t faze our hero, who just wants to blow things up.

I had a lot of fun thinking about this backstory and playing this character but I guess he was never just very high on my priorities list. Too bad, because last year I spent days farming Brewfest tokens for him so he could have a purple hat. Hey, you gotta have a geeky hat for a geeky character. True facts.

I have tons of others I could ramble about but I’d rather not crit you with the text. What are some characters that you were excited about that you wound up abandoning?

Top Fourteen Foods in WoW That Make Me Hungry

1. Bountiful Feast: Guys look at the icon on that tooltip. If you aren’t hungry now, I think something might be wrong with you.

2. Chocolate Cake Slice: Delicious cake.

3. Chocolate Square: What would YOU do for a Klondike Bar?

4. Conjured Croissant: I love croissants. Especially the ones that come in bulk from Costco. BONUS: Go to the WoWHead page for this item. Observe the screenshot. LOL.

5. Conjured Mana Pie: I seriously can’t look at this without having to repress the urge to go get a pie.

6. Golden Fish Sticks: I’m a huge junk food person and I’m a huge seafood person and fish sticks are divine. Also: Check the “screenshot” on this one, too.

7. Poached Emperor Salmon: I was born on an island in the Pacific Northwest, mere miles from the ocean. I blame this for the fact that the disease known as A Lust For Salmon At All Times runs rampant in my bloodstream.

8. Pumpkin Pie: See #5.

9. Rock-Salted Pretzel: You know those giant soft pretzels that you get at the fair? (or the Target food court?) Yeah. This. Yum.

10. Slow Roasted Turkey: I do apologize to all vegetarians that read my blog but OMG THIS MAKES ME HUNGRY.

11. Smoked Salmon: Guys I wasn’t kidding about the salmon thing I mentioned before. It’s basically the food of the gods.

12. Tasty Cupcake: More screenshot gold. And yeah cupcakes make me happy out of game as well <3 13. Versicolor Treat: This has got to be the yummiest-looking candy in the game. Mmmmm.

14. Wild Ricecake: It looks like something I could get from IHOP. Thus, I want one.

15. Male Blood Elves WAIT WAIT I DIDN’T SAY THAT

Sixteen Rarest Hunter Pets

Armory Data Mining has some fun info on hunter pets. Now some hunters are all into having what everyone else doesn’t have– you know, so when Cataclysm comes out and everyone is running around taming everything, you can say you tamed a pet when it was still underground– so I figured I’d go through, figure out which pets per family had been tamed by less than 1% of hunters with that type of pet, and list them here. There are really some underused jewels here. So without further ado:

Bird of Prey:
Dark Brown Owl/Brown Crow: 0.8%
Red Owl: 0.3% (Why?? This thing is awesome. And can’t you solo Sethekk now?)

Cat:
Orange Leopard (aka Travel Form): 0.7%
Lioness: 0.1%

Crocolisk:
Ghost Crocolisk (No longer tamable): 0.4%

Ravager:
Red & Purple Ravager: 0.2% (Another awesome color combo)

Scorpid:
Red Scorpid: 0.6%

Spider:
Green Spider: 0.8%
Tan Spider: 0.4%
Olive Spider: 0.4%
Jungle Spider: 0.3%

Wolf:
Dark Gray Worg: 0.7%
Ghost Wolf (No longer tamable): 0.6%

Worm:
Brown Worm: 0.9%
Green Worm: 0.3% (Best worm skin by far, you all are nuts! *nod*)
White Worm: 0.3%

Hit the link for the complete lowdown, as well as a list of pets with unique properties as opposed to unique skins. But now you at least have a start if you want something new and different.

Ten Things I Have Learned Since Returning to WoW

1.) People (especially healers/tanks) who queue for something just long enough to a.) ding or b.) get one more badge, and then drop group, are not earning any Pike Respect Points

2.) Nor are people who go “Pack plz Pack plz Pack plz Pack plz” when I need to Viper. EVERYONE OVERGEARS HALLS OF REFLECTION NOW, YOU WILL SURVIVE WITHOUT ASPECT OF THE PACK, PLEASE RELAX.

3.) HOLY HONOR, BATMAN WINTERGRASP

4.) Feral druid PvP taught me how to mouse-turn. It only took, what, three years to beat the keyboard turning out of me?

5.) Nothing against Sparkle Ponies or those who have them, honestly, but every time I see one I remember that I’m broke IRL. >_< 6.) Since when were moonkins tearing up Recount? What sort of madhouse world have I returned to? ( <3 ) 7.) Attumen still hates me 8.) I miss the Mechanar 9.) Warlock-kiting the slimes in Maraudon is surprisingly fun 10.) ...melee is surprisingly fun, also. Especially when you are a goggles-wearing bear! >:3

P.S. I’ve thought about it, and I’m back, suckas. Can’t guarantee I’ll be writing about hunter stuff. Oh well. I miss the community <3
