Took a Ride Into the Danger Zone

So I healed an Underbog on my druid today, since I’ve been trying to do one instance or so a week with her, just for kicks. There was a level 64ish hunter in the group.

…I bet you all think you know where this is going, right? Some sort of disaster story about this hunter?

Well you would be quite wrong! For this hunter had a very solid spec and shot rotation. Pet on passive with growl off. Eager to trap if necessary (though it wasn’t). I told him it was really nice to see a PuG’d hunter who knew what he was doing. He informed me that he also had a level 70 horde hunter and that he loved the class.

A. Kindred. Spirit!

So we basically spent the entire instance talking about hunters. It didn’t help that two of the other people in the group also had level 70 hunter characters and seemed to have a decent grasp of them as well. I never woulda expected a hunter theorycrafting discussion in Normal Underbog, but there you go. It was really refreshing and honestly I think that the odds that it are gonna happen again are pretty low, so it was fun while it lasted.

We wound up running Slave Pens after Underbog and I got a level on the tree, but honestly the discussion reeeally had me itching to play my hunter. So that’s what I spent the rest of the day doing. Ended up with this fabulous prize:

Yes, that’s right, Tawyn is 77 and the flyer is back! I have to admit though, unlike 99% of the WoW population, I wasn’t really dying to get flying back. There was something really charming and fun to me about hoofing it old-school-style. But in the end the flyer was an obvious upgrade choice. Firstly, the last zones are much more geared towards you having it. Secondly, having your own flying mount saves you a bunch of money that would otherwise go to flight paths. And thirdly, when everybody else has a flyer and you don’t… things are tough. It really sucks to be heading towards that Wolvar Pup and have somebody drop out of the sky and grab it and fly off again*. So in the end I am glad have my wings back.

* The day I hit exalted with the Kalu’ak and can get my pengiun pet is the day I do that quest for the last time and never do it again. Ever. And yes, I need the penguin pet. Linux geek, remember?

  1. You and I are leveling at about the same pace; I just hit 77 and got the flyer back too. The polearm from the Kalu’ak isn’t too shabby either, but I also highly recommend now that you’re 77 to go do the amphitheater of anguish in Zul’Drak ASAP and get yourself an Icier Barbed Spear. That is a fine, FINE piece of hardware, especially if you’re like me and remember being in love with the original I.B.S.

  2. I, too, thought of Tux when I heard about the penguin pet. When I get him, he’s going as my wallpaper on my Linux box 😀 WoW + Linux in the one screenie, what could be better?

  3. So an idle linux question, did you update to Ubuntu 8.1? And if you did, did you have trouble in the form of it trying to display the gui outside of your monitor’s frequency range? And if you did (redux), how did you fix it?

I realize this is completely non-hunter related, but you’re the only WoW-Linuxer I know. xD

  4. “hoofing it old-school”

Don’t talk to us about old school, whippersnapper!

Should have played back when it meant something, imo.

  5. @Euripides

Your senseless pun has made me angry, prepare to experience my Unleashed Fury.

Put me in the 1% of people who didnt want their flyer back. Now that I have it though, you better not touch it! Stay back!

  6. I’ve been doing the rep grind with them with my pally(revered), and honestly I will prolly always find those 2 dailies with them funny. One minute I’m helping animals find true love, the next I’m killing mothers and stealing babies. Can’t waitto get that fishing pole!

  7. Rilgon: The S.C. Slicers are pretty sexy too, but the only reason I’d recommend the Icier over them is because the Icier is a direct upgrade over Legacy (minus a teeny tiny itsy bitsy little bit of mp5), whereas you’d be missing out on a ton of stamina switching to the Slicers, and IMO, stamina’s extremely important for leveling.

Plus there are crazy people like me who are poor and spend all our gold on dragons and minipets rather than crazy things like “upgrades” and “tradeskills.”

  8. @ Rip – You should be glad that I have a Thick Hide for such puns.

@ Ishvi – Unfortunately I have been using Kubuntu 6.06 throughout my entire Linux career. The few times I have tried to upgrade have resulted in disasters involving my wireless card. I am planning on moving sometime in the next year or two and when I do, I will be getting wired internet which will make that much easier.

@ Rilgon & Sade - At this point I am aiming for the Icier Barbed Spear for a couple reasons. First reason: I was a big Ice Barbed Spear fangirl back in the day and I must have part two because I am a dork. Second reason: I tend to take a rather laid back approach to gear upgrades while leveling... then get more serious about it once I hit max level. For better or for worse... that is sorta how I roll xD I will definitely be looking into the Slicers in the near future though, they do look scrumptious.

  9. I must say I felt the same way about going back to having a flier when I hit 77, but Storm Peaks and Ice Crown pretty much demand that you have a flying mount. Plus, it feels like you appreciate the scenery more in those two zones with a flier because everything is just gigantic.
