An interesting thing I’ve noticed is that Marksmanship has given be a definite DPS boost in heroics but not so much in raids. Why? I have no idea. Maybe it’s all the buffs my pet gets. Or maybe I still just stink at anything that isn’t BM. =P

Either way, I definitely tied my current Beast Master DPS high score in OS25 yesterday. 4900 again, on that one drake that makes everyone’s numbers go crazy.

My Sarth+1 Drake numbers were well below most of the other hunters’ despite the fact that I was the only one with my pet still alive at the end of it all (all the other hunter pets died very early on in the fight. It’s my BM instincts, I guess?) Although I think a lot of that can be attributed to how the other hunters spent the bulk of their time Volleying adds, the simple truth of the matter remains that I have fallen rather viciously behind in terms of gear and I keep winding up in PuG raids with Ulduar-geared hunters who are going EoV-farming to sell the bracers or whatever. This can make it difficult to use other hunters as a yardstick so I have to use myself as a benchmark, and it’s not always easy to remember how I’ve performed in the past. But it was 3600 or so on Sarth as MM which is pretty similar to what I get as BM. (Sarth isn’t exactly a good benchmark fight because of all the stuff you’re doing, but hey.)

I’m still trying to get into Naxx to go play with Patchwerk. I tried to get into a Naxx PuG that was going on yesterday morning but they wanted a shadow priest. So I went and did a bunch of heroics which is when I realized that my heroics results as Marksmanship were quite better than they were as both BM and SV. Verrrrry interesting /strokes chin

Also found out that the second I spec’d MM, suddenly every other hunter I heroics’d with was also MM. It kept making me sad that my Trueshot Aura was going to waste because there were two of us with it. I miss Ferocious Inspiration…

Maybe its not a crazy idea that when you announced you were going MM some other hunters on your server read that and decided to do the same?

Gear might be a big part of your “problem” especially if you’re doing so well in five mans. I find my five man DPS to be much more variable depending on the group composition, the buffs I get and how we do pulls.

I’m willing to bet none of the other hunters pulled their pets back on the flame waves. Personally I hate that we have to manage our pets through that, but I do and rarely do I see another of the hunters in my raids do it. Pets are still 300-500 extra DPS and I want my wolf’s buff all the time, not just for the beginning of the fight!

Just spitballing, here (since I never played MM and am not a theorycrafter)…

Perhaps the way you are gemmed and enchanted (still have those +AP from being BM?) the AP buff is more beneficial to the front end damage of being MM whereas if you are you gemmed with more AGIL/Crit you might not get as much benefit in the opening of a fight but it would average out during the course of a fight. Since the Heroic fights are shorter than raid fights, you don’t have the extra time for the Agil/Crit to catch up in DPS.

Again, I have never played MM and don’t know the rotation, nor am I a theorycrafter so my previous suggestion could be bunk. It may also spark an idea in someone to help explain the reason MM was betting in Heroics than your BM or SV specs.

I have never played a hunter, but I have had some issues with lag in certain raids/instances. The more lag I have, the more my DPS plummets. Blame it on the interim laptop I am forced to play on.

Not saying this is your issue, but I have seen even the smallest bit of lag make a HUGE difference.

Buffs in raids make a huge difference for mm. Depending on the class makeup of the raid I do anywhere from 4000dps to 4500dps (our class makeup varies wildly between weeks). When hitting 25 man I can only assume this will become a moot point (We don’t currently have 25 man raids going 🙁 )

Don’t forget about flasks, scrolls, and pet food. (that may be getting a bit min/max but just a thought)

If there are any gems that aren’t hit or agility, make it so. Last I checked you had 1 gem that was still AP 😛 (shoulders I think)

Pike, how are you figuring in your pet’s DPS? Becasue if your pet was the only one left standing, maybe you did better than you think?

From the point of view of a pre-80 hunter, Marksman is fun. I find my pet not able to hold aggro as well I would like, but it does well if I misdirect. I think I’ll stick with BM for leveling. >.>

@ Kit – I always include my pet’s DPS with my own. So when I say “My DPS was ___”, that is mine and my pet’s DPS combined. /nod

Could you but a link in your blogroll at the right to your aroryprofile? And link your addons please? I’m trying to get back to playing my hunter. Lock is so much fun, allthough nerfs and destro makes it too simple to play.

I hate not playing BM, made me level a lock to try something new. My fav. pet is my original pet from lvl 10 !! Allthough my Gondria Spirit Beast is nice. I do admit that I’d still like Loque Spirit Beast more, but Gondria is second on my fav. of my pets.

I play Surv. now, dont think its a build true to hunters nature though, but puts up a better dps for me 🙁 Playing PVP, its the only choice, unfortunately.

Anyway, I’d like to see your build, so link your armory, and please, addons too 🙂
