Gnome Hunters: The Good, The Bad, and the Short

So someone brought up gnome hunters in the comments on my last post, so are you ready to talk about it?  I am READY to talk about it.

In case you hadn’t heard, Blizzard has been dropping hints about gnome hunters on Twitter for about a week now.  Mechanical chicken pet included:

What do I think about this? Well obviously I am

HAPPY

about this, because I love gnomes and I love hunters.    Let’s talk a little bit more about it:

THE GOOD:

  • Gnome hunters will now exist.  That’s awesome.
  • Even people who don’t like gnomes will be happy, because this gives them more chances to kill gnomes in PvP (although why would you ever do that??)
  • MECHANICAL CHICKEN PET (assuming it’s not temporary, at least)
  • This gives me hope for the idea of MORE mechanical pets in the future.
  • Every race in the game can now be a hunter, which is good for diversity/player choice.
  • Roleplaying opportunities, anyone?

THE BAD:

  • Like, nothing.  There are no negatives to this.

THE “SHORT”:

Let’s talk about faction stuff a little bit.  Long-time readers probably remember that I mostly played Alliance back in the day, and these days I mostly play Horde.  The fact is that, as time has gone on, Blizzard has managed to make the Horde more and more appealing to me.  I’ve always loved Tauren a great deal, but Blizzard later graced the Horde with blood elves and goblins (basically just green gnomes), both of whom I really love.  They also made Orgrimmar a heck of a lot cooler than it used to be.

Meanwhile, Alliance got worgen, whose movements and animations are weird and jarring to me (sorry worgen fans) and a Stormwind revamp that I’m not a huge fan of.   (I just miss old Stormwind, okay?)

Throw in the expansive vanity guild bank I have Horde-side and I’m pretty much playing that faction exclusively.

So on a personal level, there are pluses and minuses to gnome hunters.  The plus is that I can drop a level boost on a gnome hunter and then play with my friends, since I feel like approximately 99% of the people I want to play WoW with are Alliance.

But on the negative side, any gnome hunter I make probably won’t end up being a “main”, because a gnome hunter wouldn’t be Horde, and I’d prefer to stay Horde.

Oh well.  GNOMES!

Dear Players, Have Five-Man Karazhan, Love Blizzard

First of all, I do want to apologize for having not updated in a little while.  NaNoWriMo and work are both piling up on me.  Suffice to say that I am still playing and am still interested in maintaining this blog, so never fear!

Anyone who knows me knows that I love Karazhan, and so guess who was the first to freak out when Blizzard spent a couple of seconds at Blizzcon dropping hints about a five-man Karazhan revamp.  (Hint: it was me.  I was the first to freak out about it.)  Obviously I am excited, and it’s got me thinking a little about it.  How would a five-man Karazhan be handled?

tumblr_mm2o1x3H0N1rhz6g3o1_1280

In this day and age, I don’t think Blizzard will stuff all off its dozen-odd bosses into one five-man dungeon.  I mean, I’ve got a soft spot for the sprawling, endless maze that is BRD, but it’s clear that Blizzard has largely moved on from that.  In this case, it would make sense to split Karazhan into two dungeons.  Which is… fair, obviously I’d prefer to see my beloved raid as a glorious whole, but I wouldn’t blame Blizzard for chopping it up.

I don’t know who all remembers raiding Karazhan but back in the day Curator was sort of considered the unofficial “halfway point”.  It made sense because he dropped the first of two set tokens in the raid, and then you could use the backdoor to get to the second round of bosses.  As such, I feel like making Curator the final boss of Karazhan Part One fits, especially since it means you could open up Karazhan Part Two with the frenetic sock-in-the-gut fight that is Shade of Aran and that would be awesome.

The_CuratorGranted, this is all assuming that the dungeon will stay largely “as is”.  I know previous dungeon revamps have changed bosses and mechanics around, and even though I understand the logic behind this, I truly hope that Karazhan remains largely untouched.  Partially this is, admittedly, nostalgia, but partially I feel like it just stands up really well even almost a decade after release.  The bosses and their mechanics are interesting and memorable and I feel like too much change could take away from that.

Anyways, I have a LOT more to say about Karazhan (obviously) but I’ll leave it at that for now.  It may not even happen, because heck, we all know what happened when Blizzard promised us a dance studio.

What are your thoughts, though?

WoW Is Turning Into D3… And It’s Great!

BlizzCon is currently halfway over, and of course, a lot of goodies and news have already made their way to us.  (MMO-Champ has some good wrapups.)

Here are a couple of the things that stick out to me:

  • More “open world” style questing, including zones that scale to your level so you can do them in any order.
  • Diablo 3 inspired “bounty” system for daily quests
  • Diablo 3 rift-inspired dungeon challenges
  • Diablo 3 inspired transmog system (including tabards, which I am EXTREMELY happy about!)

As you can see, there’s a… lot of Diablo 3 going on.  And you know what?  I’m fine with that.  In fact, I’m pretty happy with it.  I think Diablo 3 is a great game to look at when it comes to thinking about what makes a good, intriguing “endgame”.  Even long after you finish the main story quest in Diablo 3, and long after you hit max level, you’re still running for Paragon levels, tier sets, legendaries for the Cube, and so on.

I do find it very interesting that WoW is definitely looking outside the MMO genre for inspiration.  Some people may not like that idea so much but I think it’s a great idea.  I recently read a great article about the making of Diablo 2; the devs pulled ideas from games like Civilization (which really is nothing like Diablo) and the result was a great game.  I hope the same thing happens here with WoW.

I’m really excited for Legion overall.  A lot of the new ideas that are being thrown around are really good ones.  What do you guys think?

…AND the moose you rode in on, Blizzard!

So I heard there’s a new patch coming up, apparently.  Cool stuff, right?  Excited, I went to go check it out… and promptly lost all interest.

Cataclysm dungeons added to Timewalking: Possibly my least favorite dungeons in the entire game.  Magister’s Terrace is kind of a cool consolation prize, I guess.  Oh and I do like the dragon mount.

Moose Mount Only For Heroic+ Raiders: I haven’t been able to raid in years thanks to my work schedule, so a mount I was looking forward to looks like it’s now unobtainable for me.  Ah well.  It probably would’ve wound up on the cash shop anyway.

Return of Valor: I really have no opinion on this one.  This is my neutral face:

55685…unless we can buy heirlooms and stuff with Valor like we could back in Wrath.  In which case, SIGN ME UP.

So yeah,  it looks like there’s nothing really for me to do in the new patch.  Oh well!  To be honest I wasn’t actually expecting any new content between here and Legion, and I was already fine with that.  I’ve been motivated by wanting to level alts and do Loremaster, and recently by wanting to rebuild my gold pile after, well, what happened a couple days ago.  So, I’m still good for now, at least.  Not sure if I’ll still be playing when all the WoW tokens I bought (back when they were actually cheap) run out, but I’ve still got a good few months to go before then so we’ll see what happens.

A lot of people seem to be happy about this patch so I’m happy for those people!

Next up for me in game though: Tackling Netherstorm, and trying to figure out if I’m good at playing the Auction House (spoiler: I’m not)

Melee Hunters are Officially a Thing, So Let’s Talk About It

Well, it looks like Survival is finally and officially going to be the melee spec.  And I don’t mean the weird sort of hybrid Lacerate spec from Vanilla.  A full on melee spec.

…and that’s all we know so far.  That, and they get a polearm or something for their artifact weapon.

I find myself wondering how they’re going to play out.  Will they play like a warrior?  Like a rogue?  Since we’ve got Focus and that works similarly to Energy, I’d assume it’ll be kind of like a rogue.  But I also think with large weapons like polearms, things’ll feel more like a warrior or paladin with a two-hander.

I also find myself thinking about the role the pet is going to play.  Maybe there will be combo moves where the pet and hunter act together?  Who knows!  There are a lot of possibilities.

ss538lJNj4cj18lAll I know for sure is that, even though every expansion I gripe like an old fogey about “hunters these days”, this is definitely gonna be the biggest change to the class we’ve had since mana was replaced by focus.  How is it all going to turn out?  We’ll just have to wait and see.

What do YOU guys think about Survival going melee?

World of Warcraft: Legion AKA World of Warcraft: Pike Likes Pretty Elves

So the new expansion has been announced!  Turns out my Council of Glaves guess earlier was wrong, but hey, I kind of sort of called Demon Hunter, right?  Granted I was off on the specifics, but you know, details.

What am I hyped about?  Well I’ll tell you what I’m hyped about BIG HUNKY TOPLESS ELF MEN.  That’s what I’m talkin’ about.

I saved this picture as CAN WE TALK ABOUT THIS.jpg
I saved this picture as CAN WE TALK ABOUT THIS.jpg

I’m also hyped about some of these weapons we’re getting.  Felo’melorn for my Fire Mage?  Some super awesome looking phoenix bow for Althalor?  Yes.  Sign me up.  SIGN ME UP.

Also Alleria Windrunner?  Only the return of the best Windrunner sister?  I am here for this.

I’m not 100% sold on the overall aesthetic of the expansion yet.  I feel like we’ve been fighting the Burning Legion for approximately 1295862345 years, and I’m not really into this dusky magical night elf stuff (give me more of my lovely blood elves every day).  But hey, I’m sure we’ll be getting more details in the future.  For now I’m sort of cautiously hyped more than super hyped.  Thanks to WoW Token I feel like I can sort of fund my sub indefinitely so hey, might as well play a new expansion, right?

What are you guys thinkin’?

Windows 10 And Oh Yeah The Expac Is Gonna Be Announced Soon

Couple things to talk about today.  First:

SMOOTH SAILING WITH WINDOWS 10 (SO FAR):

So today my Windows 7 partition (cause I’m a nerd who dual-boots with Linux) decided to update to Windows 10.  The update itself took about an hour and after some initial awkwardness where my screen resolution wasn’t being properly recognized, everything seems to be working fine and dandy.  I did have to disable my custom Firefox theme for now because it’s not playing nice with the minimize/maximize/close buttons, but I imagine that’s something that will get fixed in a future Firefox version.

So anyways, everything else seems to be working A-OK, including the important things like Steam and Battle.net.  I figured I’d let you all know because some people on Twitter told me they were concerned about the upgrade and I have to say that it went pretty smoothly.  The entire updating process took about an hour, though, so have a book or Nintendo 3DS to hand while you wait.

THE NEW EXPANSION WILL BE ANNOUNCED AUGUST 6:

So sayeth the Mighty Blues from On High.  What’s it gonna be?  Council of Glades?  Something completely different?  New races?  Classes?  Revamps?  Eight more days until we find out!

GET HYPE.

Apparently Blizzard Trademarked a New Thing. Let’s Take a Look.

DISCLAIMER: This could all be fake.  But it looks real to me so for now let’s roll with it.  I can’t think of anything else to write about today anyway.

So yeah, apparently Blizzard trademarked a new thing.  It’s called “Council of Glades” and it’s being trademarked as computer game software, i.e. not a book.

The million dollar question relevant to WoW players is, of course, is it Warcraft related?  My money is on yes, and here’s why:

  • The Council of Tirisfal is a thing in lore.  Tirisfal Glades is a thing in game.  Thus, Council of Glades.
  • StarCraft 2 is already getting its (final, I think) expansion.
  • It doesn’t really sound Diablo related to me.  Councils exist, but I’m not so sure about glades.   But who knows, I guess?

This brings us to four possibilities: A WoW expansion, a Hearthstone expansion, something involving HotS, or something entirely new.  Hearthstone just got a new thing and I don’t really see Blizzard doing anything completely new with the Warcraft universe, since Hearthstone is still pretty young.  It might be HotS, but that’s not nearly as exciting as wild speculation.  (Although I would sell a kidney for a Medivh hero.)

So, let’s see here:

  • Medivh was (is?) in the Council of Tirisfal
  • Medivh is connected to Khadgar
  • We were just reintroduced to Khadgar
  • It’s about time for a WoW expac announcement
  • “Council of Glades”

MAKE IT HAPPEN, BLIZZARD!

BESTIAL WRATH IS GOING OLD SCHOOL, THIS IS NOT A DRILL

BMBestial Wrath now lasts 15 seconds (up from 10 seconds).

BM 2I REPEAT, BESTIAL WRATH NOW LASTS 15 SECONDS

Do you guys remember back in the day when this sucker lasted 18 seconds?  Do you?  DO YOU?

WELL THIS ISN’T QUITE THAT BUT IT’S PRETTY DURN CLOSE

everybody-stay-calm1Okay.  So let’s relax.  Everybody stay calm.  Couple deep breaths.  This is still “in testing” so it may not go live.  And if it does, who knows when it will actually hit.

But… but… guys…

OLD SCHOOL BESTIAL WRATH MOTHERF*CKERS

Mercenary Mode is a Band-Aid (But It’s a Good Band-Aid)

So, the big news!  Remember not so long ago when I was lamenting the faction imbalance in PvP lately?  Well have no fear, Mercenary Mode is here, which lets you queue up for the opposite faction in order to alleviate pesky things like queue times.

Although this doesn’t address whatever the core, underlying problems are– and I suspect racials have to do with a lot of it– I think this will probably do a decent enough job at helping to treat the symptoms, at least.  I don’t really suspect us Hordies will be able to try the faction hop anytime soon, since it’s the Alliance who has most of the queue problems, but hey, maybe with some Alliance on our side we can actually win AV now?  Maybe?  Like, just once a week?

Honestly my biggest question right now has to do with battleground chat.  It’s always been a toxic place; one that I put up with, rather than leave, just because it’s nice to be able to call out “incs” and be able to actually talk tactics on the rare occasions that I’m not making liberal use of the ignore feature.  Presumably now you will be able to communicate with the opposing faction and I foresee a lot of dumb playground fights and namecalling from both sides.

You know who else forsees? ARCHMAGE TIMEAR!
You know who else forsees? ARCHMAGE TIMEAR!

Ah well.  More people to sacrifice to Ignore for the Ignore God, I suppose.

The REAL question now becomes “Is Ashran fixable?”  (Probably not)
