I Don’t Mean to Rant, But…

Dear level 36 hunter in Scarlet Monastery,

No matter how many times you insist that I’m wrong and that your addon is right, Strength is still not for you.

Love, Pike.

(It is possible that I am beating a dead horse here, but when every one of the last three or four hunters my warlock has PuG’d with have been hunters rolling on Strength gear, it needs to be repeated. I would, however, like to congratulate any low-level or newer hunters reading this. Because if you are reading this, it means you are willing to do research about your class, and I /salute you.)

  1. I know exactly how you feel! But there’s nothing to make you feel like your blogging and guides have purpose more than seeing the oodles of unknowledgeable hunters still leveling, right?

  2. /console

I see one running around Moon Guard with Edge of Ruin happily equipped all the time. I think most “young” hunters need on stuff like this because it looks cool more than anything else. Regardless of what they might say.

  3. Oh I have had this conversation many a time, but it ups my AP, yeah not your ranged dude, you are not going to melee them to death. It is hard to see hunters doing 20dps when you run sm and you are doing over a 100. or the ones that think amo is not important

  4. What’s worse is watching a hunter that only melees rolling need on cloth with Stamina.

I only mention it because I’ve seen it.

  5. Not sure which was worse, but in addition to the ones that roll on strength gear (or even spirit/SP) I keep running into ones that refuse to have a pet out, or use Distracting Shot every chance they get >.<

  6. @windpaw Edge of ruin isnt too bad at least until you can get marrowstrike, if its a small upgrade and noone really needs it i would go for it

  7. I love it when you try to help someone with something they’re doing very, very wrong, and all you get back is “wut lulz noob ur gay i r teh rite roflmao hoontar uzes str nooooooooob lololol!!!lll!!1!11!!111!!!!”

  8. Well, actually yes. Now that you ask my Hunter does have some Strength gear. Mostly because the quest rewrds/whatever drops he picked up along the way had other qualities too that were worth using them to upgrade what he had before. It would be great if WoW always dropped stuff that is entirely appropriate for the character but it don’t. Maybe the next boss I kill will bring me more hunter-ry goodness but until then I’ll settle for living longer.

  9. I wish LFD had an option for ‘No Hunters’. At least while leveling. I have no problems with hunters at 80, but almost every single problem I’ve had level 15-30 (where my baby pally tank is right now) has been caused by a hunter. (Except one that can be pinned on a fury warrior.)

  10. Even better than this is the time I was doing my Sons of Hodir dailies and I saw a level 80 Hunter meleeing the Jormungars and the oils in the cave.

With Aspect of the Cheetah on.

  11. @ Ardprest – Oh, he could have made a case for it. It had some crit on it, so he coulda just said he wanted the crit and linked me a crappy green he was wearing and proven it was better.

BUT, he continually insisted I was wrong when I told him that Strength does not equal Ranged Attack Power.

That was what the facepalm was for, more than anything… =P

  12. Sadly, the hunters that read blogs are not likely to be rolling on Str items and vice versa, so you’re ranting to the wrong crowd… although I agree with you, because the same thing happens to me too 🙂

  13. All I can say is…. /sigh

I see it all too often on my other hunters. At least at times some people are willing to hear you out. Of course, I’ve also run with paladin tanks (remember also 80 tankadin here) that absolutely positively REFUSE to use Rightious Fury or a sheild. When both end up co-existing…. the run goes downhill VERY fast.

“Ret kan tankz lolz!” I’ve actually SEEN that before. And people wonder why actual tank specs loathe the non-specs that claim tank status…. *shudder* DK is the only acceptable 2H tank. PERIOD. (Druids do not count as they are in an animal form)

I can usually make up for a bad hunter in the DPS and pet useage. However, there is very little way I can make up for some idiot dps that put themselves in as a tank and mistakenly believe that just because they have plate they = Tank.

A Kitty Feral Druid has a better shot at tanking an instance in bear form that a Ret Spec 2H weilding or Fury/Arms Warrior. *shudders*

    Okay, I think I’m done.

  14. And I won’t start on those damn Paladins who’ve got lost or something in the middle of an instance or the Warriors who think that their shiny new plate means they can take on 10 mobs at once or the resto Druids who suddenly firget how to heal or the . . . But I digress. You’re point is sadly true Pike and for every learning Hunter (like myself, I hope) there are a hundred or more who JUST WON’T LISTEN! That’s what makes random dungeons fun k? . . . k??

  15. Edge of ruin isnt too bad at least until you can get marrowstrike

…what. The blue ilvl 200 two-handed sword from Revered Knights of the Ebon Blade would be better than Edge of Ruin.

    Aaaaanyways yeah, if I enumerated the number of caster drops I’ve lost on Elysis or Telsaar to Hunters, I’d probably want to cry. ;_;

  16. I melee when I’m leveling weapons or out of ammo or PVP when people get close. BTW All weapon skills are maxed out. Just recently when farming in STV I meleed the NPCs so I wouldn’t waste epic ammo.

  17. My recent pet hate has been hunters standing on random ledges that evade the mobs. One hunter was saying he was CCing it by evading it, bearing in mind that until he had evaded it, it was on about 5% health.

That and the obvious hunter no nos when it comes to loot.

Oh and the paladin tanks who think they can chain pull regardless of instance. I had an RFK run where they pulled a load then died whining for heals not realising theres a lot of mana burning mobs. We run in and they do exactly the same.

  18. I am leveling a Druid. He’s at lvl 45 and so far I have healed Deadmines, Wailing Caverns, Scarlet Mon, Uldaman, and Zul Farak ( and a couple of FAIL attempts at Mauradon. In each and every one, I have encountered a hunter with either no pet, won’t send pet to attack, or tries to duke it out with mobs. So far, in every case, when I have explained that my main is an 80 Hunter who is my guild’s class lead and then offer some advice ….they get defensive, scornful and generally obnoxious…………I am beginning to despair about our class.

Of course ..they have all been elves…..I expect that the dwarves will be MUCH better 😉

  19. But…but…strength is awesome for those huntards who spec useless talents like Savage Strikes (zomgsszorrzz pwnage so epic!!!!1!!1!!).
This is quite embarrassing for me, but back when I was baby Smyrf and a total WoW noob, I used to be a melee hunter. :-\ When I hit level 10 and got my very first pet (a cute wittle Durotar tiger), I never had growl on. Why? Because I felt bad when my pet was attacked. -.- My brothers were really embarrassed of me though and eventually managed to talk me out of it (“Your pet is SUPPOSED to take all the damage from you”). Bless their little hearts for not calling me an idiot and facepalming me (though I’m sure they were doing it internally).
    :p

  20. These stories of idiot hunters are all too common. I’ve seen many similar ones myself but the one that takes the cake for me is a warlock in the teens.

He would always be in melee range, using drain soul and creating healthstones. When I suggested that standing back and using his DOTS was a better idea he insisted that “he liked both kinds of fighting (melee and magic)” and needed the healthstones for healing. The same locktard also insisted that he needed to duel people to get soul shards because it was faster than getting them from mobs.

I was on my mid-40’s lock at the time.

  21. i also see alot of strength using hunters some with no bows or guns i usually try to help them but they either a) don’t have the money to fix there gear b) don’t kno how to talk yet or c) think they kno how to play a hunter correctly my poor new 80 hunter gts yelled at for having 1k dps ppl say idk what i’m doing …. i do …. it’s just my gear i sware v(-.-)v
