Beast Mastery in Patch 3.1

…hasn’t changed a lot in terms of a spec. I am currently spec’d 51/15/5 because I maintain that the value from Improved Tracking is worth tossing five points in SV. After much experimentation I finally decided to give up two points in Cobra Strikes for it (along with the three points I gave up in Improved Arcane Shot) and it seems to be working out okay.

To be honest I haven’t done anything since 3.1 that would really test my DPS, outside of an attempt at the new VoA boss that lasted about ten seconds before we all wiped and then the instance reset– but things are looking good on the training dummies. I sort of think it might be because everyone is using the training dummies right now so I’m getting the benefit of all the debuffs on the target and I get to use Kill Shots… but seriously, I used to get 2100-2200 on the training dummy and now I’m getting 2600-2800, using the aforementioned spec, the typical shot priority of Serpent Sting > Kill Shot > Arcane Shot > Multishot > Steady Shot, and a raptor pet. And keep in mind that the training dummies don’t count towards your 5% extra Improved Tracking damage.

Hopefully I can get into a heroic at some point soon (Ulduar I’m not going to see for a while, and I’ve opted out of my typical Naxx run this week because I wanted a break), and I can get a good look at how the patch has effected us Beast Masters.

No I haven’t bought dual-spec yet. It’s pricey and to be honest I think I’d rather have it on my druid first, although on the other hand I don’t know what I’d dual spec her to, anyway.

And yes, a post on pet specs regarding the new talents is coming.

The boyfriend has a post up at his blog about his background with the game and guilds, and I rather enjoyed it because, well, for the most part, it’s my background too. Check it out if you’re looking for something else to read and are curious in a brief guild history de Pike.

  1. I picked up something pretty similar on my hunter although I didn’t take up the 5% improved tracking. Since I hate macro manage tracking I decided to dump those points back into BM/MM trees. I ended up with a hybrid 53/18. Now kill shot need to be macro managed I definitely see a decrease on my DPS. I wish someone would figure out a way to put kill shot back into the macro while not making wow script god mad.

  2. Heheh , i am already workin on that too , i have the Soloing and Pvp pet specs out .

I am working on the Raiding one soon , just fixing mods and testing out my Dual MM spec atm . There is a little pet glitch when you change specs tho , you have to respec your pet everytime you changed , but i found a loop hole .heheh go me

You have to have a set BM pet and a set MM/SV pet .
First you must Dismiss your pet , change spec then use Call stable pet to bring out another pet so that you dont have to reput your pet talents in
Call stable pet resets cooldown when you change into your dual spec

  3. In case you all get Dual specs, know that they are very buggy atm. Last night I had all but five points reset from my active build when I leveled. This is nice I guess for anyone who wants a free respec every level, but If I wasn’t a Shadowpriest I wouldnt have noticed. I had to activate my secondary build and then switch back to make the unspent points come back so I could spec. Even logging out and back in wouldn’t fix the problem.

People who already have dual specs be very careful when you level or even log on at this point, they are kinda iffy.

Also Pike I would suggest doing Boomkin dual spec on your druid. I’m pretty sure she is Resto so it is a easy switch. Also Boomkin may be the most entertaining spec I have ever played so its probably worth a try.

  4. ha–! My secondary spec is identical to yours. xD

Hmm.. I must be getting out of touch with playing as BM. I was only able to pull around 2.5k-2.6k with a raptor on my brief DPS testing yesterday. I’ve been SV since the BM nerf… blah. 0o can my lack of proper glyphs/AP gems really account for ~500 dps?

Also, lol, my wolf glitched. He has 36 talent points (which is essentially every single talent maxed on the Ferocity tree.) …. ilu Dual Spec.

  5. If you are a BM spec, wouldn’t it be to your DPS advantage to switch out the standard raptor for the exotic devilsaur? My hunter is only 46, but from the info I have seen so far it seems as though the DS is a beefier raptor in terms of power and similar abilities. Not being able to see yourlinked spec due to posting this from my cell, do you not have the 1 point for exotics? If not, would taking 1 point (1%) from improved tracking and putting it into exotic pets and grabbing a devilsaur make up for the lost 1% from tracking?

  6. @ TheKunkel – I know boomkin makes the most sense. But to be honest, I’ve played Boomkin, and I’ve played cat, and oddly enough I thought cat was more fun. Hence my fence-sitting.

@ Crowen – yes I have the exotic pet talent. Always have, even when Readiness was the cool kid in town. A part of me would like to experiment with different pets but another part of me wants to bring the pets I love to a raid. You gotta find a balance. You gotta remember one important thing about me: I’m not entirely about max-DPS. I suppose I’m kind of odd that way really. I like finding max DPS within a spec even if that spec itself is not providing overall max DPS, and I like doing good DPS with a pet if I like the pet.

  7. Ok, just wondering. I know you’re all about your favorite pets, no matter if they are the “optimized pet” or not, I completely agree about taking *your* best pet, not *the* best pet. 🙂
But I do need to ask, is what I put down “correct” from a maxxing out DPS point of view?

WTB engineering jeeps to have Devilsaurs chase around. 🙂

  8. — Forgot to add. I remember reading your story of finding said raptor in menethil harbor, getting ready to be released by the town. Good read. 🙂

  9. @ Crowen – I think that Devilsaurs are the current tops for Beastmaster DPS right now yeah. I’d like to tame one and get it to 80 just to make a good comparison, but I dunno, then I’d probably get attached and all my stable slots would be full! =P

Wolves are supposed to be really good right now with their improved Furious Howl. Cats and raptors should still be up there.

And I’m glad you liked the story!

  10. if you need devilsaur just for testing, tame king dredd out of drak. Took me 5 or so tries, but when you need a top level DS fast, it’s worth the tries.
