@ Anonymous - thank you for your comment and thoughts. As I said, I certainly respect the arguments for Defensive, I however, have personally found that it simply causes more trouble for me personally-- not necessarily for anyone else, but for me.

Also, it has been shown that once you hit 30% crit, Windserpents do indeed begin to out-DPS cats/ravagers/raptors (assuming you have points in Go for the Throat)... you will notice that most hunters in very high level raids use Windserpents (I have noticed this, anyway) for this reason!

Very good advice -- for the most part. I am not "one" with my pet. My cat had better guard my back while I am looting, herbing, drinking or eating or just looking in the opposite direction of an oncoming unexpected add.

My pet has been in defensive mode at almost all times in solo PvE for more than 50 levels without that backfiring once. On three occasions I have set my pet to passive, activated Prowl and then Shadow Melded in order to recover from a fight gone badly wrong or to wait for a named NPC to respawn. "Best Friend" to me means just that. Part of my pet's job is watching my six while I am busy doing something else. Your personal, RP preference should be respected. However, it is not sound, general advice.

Wind Serpents are not DPS pets. For now, that is a classification shared by cats, raptors and ravagers. While you may be very attached to your Wind Serpent and it is more than adequate for solo PvE, it leaves much to be desired as a DPS pet in instances.

Mosshoof, you turn Growl off by right clicking on its icon on your pet tool bar.

That macro is cheaper and lazier than shot rotation xD

I disagree with the passive business though. I want my pets to have a little personality, and sometimes that means they do something I didn't count on them doing. Passive's for instances, outside i'ts Defensive all the way for me :p

In defence or Defensive stance... At the top level, your pet is your Best Friend. Totally inseparable and looking out for each other. If someone is killing your pet then they're going to feel an extra burst of rage from her mistress, and vice versa, if the mobs want to come for you, they're going to have to go through your pet first.

That's your general soloing mode, it's passive all the way for instances however. That's how we roll. :)

@ Mosshoof - I considered including that, actually, when I was first writing the guide up but then I opted to leave it out. Thank you for reminding me that it was still neeeded! You right click on it, by the way.

Thanks for writing these.

I met a hunter in a ramparts group the other day who, well... wasn't the best. He was wearing shammy +spell damage gear, couldn't trap, and had talent points all over the place.

So I had a chat with him after the run, telling him where he was going wrong and suggesting changes.

And then, I pointed him at your and BRK's sites. So at least he's in good hands now! :)

I've been busy with other characters than my hunter, so I've forgotten the mechanics... I think one thing stands out that might need a bit of clarification:

Now make sure Growl is "on" and has the little glowing box around it on your pet bar.

A reminder of what you need to do to turn growl on and off, please?
